The Dogsthorpe Web SiteI was inspired to start this web site after visiting the Southery Village, Norfolk, UK, web site, which just happens to be where my grand parents lived until I was 12. I really enjoyed reading about the history of the place, and thought other people may be as interested in finding out about Dogsthorpe. I am particularly interested in the pre 1950’s history when Dogsthorpe centred on the Bluebell Inn rather than Central Avenue as it does now. I was born in Welland Road and, apart from a year south of the river, I have lived in Dogsthorpe and Garton End all my life. If you have anything interesting to add please email adele@dogsthorpe.com. One interesting fact, there aren’t any other Dogsthorpes, well there was one link but no other places called Dogsthorpe, that I could find, in the world! In the five years since I created this site I have been contacted by several people with an interest in the history of Dogsthorpe Dr Avril Lumley Prior has been kind enough to let me add her articles on Medieval Doddesthorpe and The Pioneers of Early Dogsthorpe to the site. Dogsthorpe Junior School have also been in touch, they have some facinating pieces of history in the form of school records, including some which predate the 1950's school. They also have records from slightly more recent history, and I found myself and my brother, and several names from my past. I have recently learned that Dogsthorpe had connections with the Fitzwilliams of Milton Estate, and one of them chose to live in Dogsthorpe even after inheriting Milton House. If anyone has more information about any part of Dogsthorpe's history, I would be very interested to hear it. |
