>1 Welland Rd
From George Meadows: No 1 Welland Road and was occupied by Mrs Truss & Mr & Mrs Jack Collins for many years in the past. Jack had been a lorry driver for our firm and eventually became the resident engineer, probably as I believe he was with Frederick Sage & Co at one time. I understand he was first employed by my grandfather to start his car! John Crunkhorn told me that he used to go on trips with Jack, collecting and delivering local produce. He and the cottage are mentioned in John Crunkhorn's book Memories of Dogsthorpe.
This cottage is today sandwiched between the Bluebell Pub and Tesco Express. However it has survived 400 years of history and Dogsthorpe was a very different place when it was built. Fortunately it is easy to identify in the census records as it is next to the Bluebell, giving a choice of 2 records, but the Blacksmith's forge a few doors away gives a clue in which direction the record was taken.
1911 Census next door to the Bluebell.
- Joseph Truss, 46, Farm labourer, born Walton Paston. There is something written in the Infirmity column "Syncope" is my best guess and age afflicted is 45.
- Mary Ann Truss, wife, 43, married 18 years 1 child still living, born Balsham, Cambs.
- Rose Truss, daughter, 9, born Dogsthorpe.

1841 Census
Unfortunately here the trail ran cold. I found the Titman family living in Newark, and as I couldn't identify the Bluebell in the 1841 census I thought it would be impossible to find its neighbour.
However by comparing the 1841 and 1851 Census, and identifying the close neighbours in the 1850 cutting about the sale of the Bluebell I found that Thomas Turner, 53, Baker who was living next to John Titman in 1851, happened to have been there 10 years earlier. Thomas Chappel the Blacksmith was also listed giving me the direction the Census was taken. This would indicate that in 1841 this cottage was being lived in by:
- Joseph Adams, 25, Ag lab, born out of county.
- Susanah Adams, 30, also born out of county.
- William Adams, 1, born Northants.
- n k Adams, 1 day, born Northants. (I guess that n k is for not known and baby hadn't been named at 1 day old).
- Ann Eldered, 76, Independent means, born Northants.
- Sarah Eldered, 6, born Northants.
Unfortunately the 1841 census doesn't give us interesting things like relationships.
