Browsing through the 1911 Census I came across Richard Pepperlow Gooding, living in Figtree Cottages Dogsthorpe.
- Richard Pepperlow Gooding, Head, born 1868 in Dogsthorpe, he was a smith striker working for Bransby and Sons Motor Body Works.
- Zilpah Gooding, wife, born 1866 in Stainfield. She had been married 17 years, had 8 children, 2 of whom had died.
- Frank Gooding, son, single, born 1895 in Lincoln. A butcher for the Co-op Society.
- Harry Gooding, son, single, born1897 in Peterborough. A motor body maker's apprentice for Bransby and Sons.
- Violet Gooding, daughter, and Fridrick Gooding, son, have no ages and these lines have been crossed out, I suspect these are the children who died.
- Buckard Gooding, son, born 1902 in Dogsthorpe. In school.
- Fredrick Gooding, son, born1904 in Peterborough.
- John Robert Gooding, son, born 1905 in Dogsthorpe.
- Sydney Gooding, son, born 1907 in Dogshorpe.
They lived in 5 rooms.
Richard was obviously moving with the times working for a motor body works. Rootsweb came up with the suggestion that Bransby and son, may be Brainsby. In the 1871 census I found Thomas Brainsby born 1822 in Glinton, and son John Thomas born 1851 in Peterborough, Coachbuilders in Westgate Peterborough. However even the younger Brainsby had died by 1886 some 25 years before Richard Gooding worked in the business.
I also found the family living in Dogsthorpe in 1901, as above minus the younger children. Richard is a blacksmith's labourer.
Courtesy of Zilpah's unusual first name I was able to find her as Zilpah Carter, born in 1866 in Stainfield, Lincoln. In 1891 she was working as a servant in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Richard and Zilpah married in summer 1894 in Lincolnshire. The both lived to a good age, Richard died aged 80 in Jun 1948, and Zilpah lived to be 88, she died in 1954. Both died in Peterborough.
In 1891 Richard is 23 and a boarder in Gildersome Yorkshire, he is a porter on the Great Northern Railway.
However his mother in 1891 is living in Dogsthorpe, next door but one to the Blacksmiths shop.
- Martha Gooding, head, widow, born 1826 in Wisbech. She is a sick nurse.
- Alexander Gooding, grandson, born 1900 in Dogsthorpe.
In 1881 Richard is 13 and an agricultural labourer living in Dogsthorpe with his widowed mother and 3 siblings.
- Martha Gooding, head, widow born 1826 in Wisbech. She is a charwoman.
- Amelia Gooding, daughter, single, born 1864 in Stanground Huntingdonshire. A domestic servant.
- Richard P Gooding, son, single, born 1868 in Dogsthorpe. Agricultural labourer.
- Frederick J Gooding, son, born 1872 in Dogsthorpe. Scholar.
- Ethel M Gooding, daughter, born1873 in Dogsthorpe. Scholar.
In 1871 Richard is 3:
- Robert N Gooding, head, born 1815 in Deptford, Kent. He is a master potmaker.
- Martha Gooding, wife, born 1827 in Wisbech.
- Matilda A Gooding, daughter single, born 1852 in Wisbech. A schoolmistress.
- Robert N Gooding, son, single, born 1854 in Wisbech. A pot maker.
- John Gooding, son, born 1857 in Fletton Hunts. A pot maker.
- Fanny Gooding, daughter, born 1866 in Dogsthorpe. Scholar.
- Richard P Gooding son, born 1868 in Dogsthorpe. Scholar.
- Elizabeth M Gooding, sister of head of family, single, born 1825 in Deptford, Kent. No occupation.
We can gather from the dates and places of the children that the family started married life in Wisbech before moving to Peterborough area between 1854 and 1857, and settled in Dogsthorpe in about 1865. Fletton, Stanground and Dogsthorpe had brickmaking industries. Interestingly the Gooding family lived next door but one to Thomas Parker who owned the brickworks from 1872.
Going back to the 1861 Census Robert Nathaniel Gooding is in Stanground working as a potmaker.
In 1851 Robert is in Wisbech with his father both widowers and potters.
- Robert Gooding head, widower, born 1817 in Deptford Kent. Potter
- Robert Gooding, father, widower, born 1782 in Suffolk (Waxham?) Potter.
A search for marriages showed that Robert Gooding was married in Jan 1846 in Maidstone, Kent, and a Nathaniel Gooding was married in Oct 1851 in Wisbech, the dates and places make me think these records both belong to our Robert Nathaniel Gooding.
