By the 1871 census, Dogsthorpe and "Garden End" were recorded as part of Peterborough St Pauls parish. The huge expansion in New England due to the railways meant a new parish had been created.

The Description of the Enumerator District, gives some detail of the area.

"Part of the parish of Peterborough comprising the hamlet of Dogsthorpe, Garden End and Railway crossing Vergette's Brickyard and other houses on Eastern side of Lincoln Road opposite New England up to the railway bridge and Crown Street, exclusive of Millfield, Dogsthorpe Road, and Hills Estate."
