In 1891 The Grange was the first house on the census.

The occupants were
  • James McCallum Craig 52, a Builder and employer born in Scotland.
  • Sophia Craig 54, his wife, born in Peterborough.
  • Kate 27, born in London.
  • Margaret 24,
  • James McCallum Craig 18,
  • Mabel Sophia 16,
  • Harriett 15,
  • William 13,
  • Kenneth C 10, all born in Peterborough.
There were also a housemaid Elizabeth Mason 20, born in Holme, Hunts, and a cook Mary Elizabeth Jeffries 23, born in Barnack, Northants.
 
Also on this census is Grange Lodge, which can be seen on the 1901 map.
This house was occupied by Edward W Smith 25, a groom and gardener, born St Marks Islington, London; his wife Mary 26, born Fenny Stratford Bucks; and his sister in law Annie M Pilkin 18, born in Cambridge.
 
James McCallum Craig died on 9th July 1897.
Probate Notice: Craig James McCallum of Dogsthorpe Grange Peterborough gentleman died 9 July 1897. Probate Peterborough 17 September to John Proctor artist Sophia Craig widow and Kate Craig spinster Effects £6021 2s 6d.
 

1901 Census The Grange is occupied by Sophia Craig, b1841, a widow, and her son Kenneth C Craig b1881, a superintendent builder. They were both born in Peterborough. They had a cook and housemaid also living there.

 
1911 Census Sophia Craig now aged 70 was still living at the Grange, with her 2 daughters Kate b 1874 and Margaret b 1876, both single. Margaret was born in Peterborough, but Kate was born in London. They had a housemaid and a cook living with them. The 1911 census also tells us that Sophia had 9 children seven of whom were still living. The address was given as Dogsthorpe Grange, Peterborough and in 1911 the house had 15 rooms.
 
So when the house was sold in 1936 Kate was 62, and Margaret was 60.

 

James was baptised on 14 Apr 1838 in Irvine, Ayr, Scotland, his parents were James Craig and Mary Ann Mcallum. 
He married Sophia Glover in the last quarter of 1859 in Peterborough.
1861 James McCraig 22, Draper, born in Scotland, is a lodger in Oakham, with his wife Sophia and son James 9 months, born in Oakham.
1864 Daughter Kate Craig born in London.
1870 Son James McCallum Craig aged 9 dies in Peterborough.
1871 James McCallum Craig is a draper living in Cowgate,
1881 he was a retired draper living on Lincoln Rd.
