Mr William Bone was another long time resident of Garton End, he lived in the bungalow next door to the Comet, but he had lived in Garton End prior to moving there, he lived in one of the semi-detached cottages on the bend, and built the bungalow in part of the garden. Below is a photo of Mr Bone and a horse at Garton End pond, which was on the double bend and filled in so that the 1930s houses could be built.
In the 1901 Census living in Garton End Lane:
William Bone b1884 is a Domestic Gardener,
living with his parents:
George Bone b1852 Market Gardner working at home,
Elizabeth Bone b 1851. His parents are from Norfolk but William was born in Peterborough.
Going back to the previous census shows that William and family arrived in Garton End between the birth of his sister Lilly in 1881 and William own birth in 1883. The were also 3 older daughters in the family
Susannah b1875 in Terrington St John
Rosetta b1876 in Walpole St Peter
Lilly b 1881 in Wooton, near Kings Lynn.
The 1911 Census nothing has changed since 1901, William is living with George and Elizabeth. This census does tell us that George and Elizabeth had 5 children, 4 of whom are still living.
I also found William married Elizabeth Haynes (1879 - 1950) in Sheffield in1915, and they had a daughter Edith Elizabeth Bone (1916 -2005) born in Peterborough.
William also married Ruth Hayward (1885 - 1959) in 1954,
William died in 1975 aged 92.
Edith Bone married Frederick C Snow (1914 - 1961) in 1940, but in her later years returned to live in the same bungalow as her father, next door to the Comet, until she died in 2005.
Which amounts to the family living continuously in Garton End for over 120 years.
Thank you to Matt Snow who gave me the following information in the Guest Book
Hi. This site is really interesting. My great grandfather was William Bone, who you have a sub-heading on under Garton End. I grew up at 15 Sallows Road, that my parents had bought off my nan (Edith) when she moved back to 117 Garton End Road, and then they built a house at number 17, before moving from the area about 6 years ago.
William Bone's farmhouse was a semi and at one time the other half was the police house. Then the Anthony family lived there for many years. Later Bill had a small bungalow built in his garden
Matt Snow has come up trumps again with these excellent photos of William Bone.
