It seems appropriate that a place previously called Garden End should have some Plants in it.

Starting at the begining Simon Plant b1787, born in Halesworth Suffolk, can be found in the 1841 Census, he is a tailor and Chelsea pensioner. He lived in Garton End with his wife and all the children listed were born there. Of course he is old enough to have a previous wife and family, but as there are no earlier census it makes them more difficult to find. They had certainly lived in Dogsthorpe since before 1831 when their first child John was born.

Simons children:

John b1831, William b 1833 d 1846, Sarah b1837, Edward b1839 d 1914, Alfred b 1842 d 1906, Herbert b 1843.

Simon died in 1861, his widow Sarah (nee Sargeant) b1810 in Peterborough, was 23 years his junior. She is listed in the 1881 census as a shopkeeper living alone in Garton End.

In the 1891 and 1901 census (see 1 Welland Rd) Thomas Plant b 1840 in Ailsworth, Peterborough is living in the middle of Dogsthorpe, he is an Railway Labourer, and living with his daughters Annie E b1868, and Mary A, b1873 both born in Helpston. Tracing  Thomas back to 1881, still in Dosthorpe we find his wife Mary Ann b 1840 in Dogsthorpe. From the 1841 and 1851 census Thomas' parents were John Plant b 1806 in Yarwell, Northants, and Elizabeth Reed b1806 in Ailsworth.

Coming even more up to date Alec James Plant (1906 - 1996) and his wife (married 1929) Enid Etty B Edmunds (1904 - 1988) lived at 134 Garton End Rd from when the houses were built in the 1930s until shortly before his death in the 1990s. In the 1911 census,  Enid Edmunds was living at 152 Allen House, Dogsthorpe Road, with her parents William 38, and Alice 34, and her siblings Winifred 10, and Ivy 3. William was a Railway Carriage and Wagon Examiner.

1911 Census

We find Alec James Plant aged 5, living with his family at the Manor House, Deeping Gate, Market Deeping.

  • Fred Simon Plant, 43, Builder (house) born Peterborough.
  • Charlotte Anne, 41, married 21 years, 5 chidren all still living. Born Ashill Norfolk.
  • Cecely Amelia, daughter, 16, born Huntingdon.
  • Herbert Fred, son, 13, born Watford.
  • Sidney Samuel, son, 7, born Peterborough.
  • Alec James, son, 5, born Stamford, Lincs.
  • Edward Findley, boarder, 22, Grocers assistant, born Tooting London.

Fred Simon Plant 1868 - 1933 was the son of Alfred Plant b1842. So Alec 1906 - 1996 was the Gt Grandson of Simon Plant b1787 and returned to live most of his married life in Garton End.
