Rose Cottage pictured at the junction of Dogsthorpe Rd and Garton End Rd.

Thanks to Nicola Reynolds for the fact that It was built as the St Leonards Arms in 1861, then converted to residential early 1900s.

I couldn't find an entry in the 1861 Census, but perhaps the building wasn't completed when the Census was taken. If anyone has any information about the St Leonards Arms please do let me know.

 In the 1871 Census

  • John Dudley  31  Mar  Cottager born Dogsthorpe
  • Elizabeth Dudley  37  born Dogsthorpe
  • John Thomas  4   born Dogsthorpe
  • Mary  ?  2  born Dogsthorpe
  • ? Marie  2 mo   born Dogsthorpe

Possibly also living in Rose Cottage (especially when you consider the name coincidence)

  • Abraham Rose  26  Labourer  born Newark
  • Lucy Rose  27  born Essendine Rutland
  • Charles  7  born Peterborough
  • John William  2  born Peterborough.

 1881 Census

Rose Cottage is again identified:

  • Thomas Smith  66 Agricultural labourer  born Crowland Lincs
  • Sarah Smith  64   born  Newark Northants

And a second household also identified as Rose Cottage

  • Isaac Wright  24 Railway shunter  Born  Astley Warks
  • Harriet Wright  30   born  Bedworth  Warks
  • Joseph Isaac  1    born  Peterborough

 1891 Census

In this census the 2 households are helpfully identified as Dogsthorpe Rd Rose Cottage,  and Garton End Rose Cottage.

Living in Dogsthorpe Rd

  • Abel Harris   42   Railway labourer   born Sreatly Beds
  • Lois Harris 40   born Dogsthorpe
  • Ada  Harris 14   born Peterborough
  • Ann Matthews   Mother  70 born Luton Beds

The Garton End household comprises of

  • Joseph Woodcock  57  Railway labourer  born Wilbaston Northampton
  • Emma Woodcock  50 Born Shatten Norfolk
  • Arthur Woodcock  son  19  Railway labourer   born  Timberland Lincs
  • Earnest J Harvey  visitor  8   scholar   born Peterborough
  • Elizabeth Burton  niece  4  born Stafford
  • Louisa Burton  niece   3  born Stafford

 1901 Census

The family in 1 Rose Cottage are the same as the Garton End household 10 years earlier, so unless they moved next door the houses were listed in the opposite direction.

  • Joseph Woodcock  70 Market Gardener  born Wilbaston Northants
  • Emma Woodcock  61  born Whatton Norfolk
  • Thomas W Burton brother in law  54 Railway engine fitter  born  Ince Cheshire
  • Ernest J Harvey  boarder  18 Railway sheet repairer  born  Peterborough
  • Elizabeth Burton niece 14   born Stafford
  • Louisa Burton niece 13  born Stafford

2 Rose Cottage

  • John Britten 51  General labourer  born Castor Northants
  • Kathleen Britten  49  born Liverpool
  • John  Britten  20  Railway engine cleaner  born Adershot
  • William Britten 10  born Peterborough

In the 1911 Census only one entry is identified as Rose Cottage. See image below.

Not many houses can be viewed from 3 sides on Google maps, below are views of Rose Cottage today.
