Robert Hobbs' (50yrs) occupation leapt out of the 1881 census, the Ag labs were gradually being replaced by railway workers, but the last thing you expect in Dogsthorpe is "Staff Sergeant, Bombay Army on Furlough".
His family comprised of wife Mary, 34, born Cork, Ireland.
Daughter Clara Elizabeth, 13, born Hydrabad Scinde, East Indies
Daughter Caroline Mary, 11, born Poona, East Indies
Daughter Susan Ellen, 9, born Belgami, East Indies
Checking the other census records I found Robert was originally from Ailsworth and from the 1851 census his parents were Robert b1800, and Susanah b 1791.
His stay in Dogsthorpe was quite short, by 1891 he had 2 further children James b 1882 in Dogsthorpe, and Agnes b 1883 in Ailsworth, Peterborough. His wife Mary had also died in 1883.
Looking further into the life of Robert Hobbs, this is much more of a tale of Ailsworth folk who happened to be in Dogsthorpe during 1881.
Robert appears to have married three times.
I found a marriage in 1856 in Peterborough, but this couldn't be to Mary b1847, as she would have been 9 at the time. I assume that as their eldest child was born in 1868 Robert and Mary must have married in the mid 1860s, but as she is from Cork and the children were born in India, the wedding could have been anywhere. Following Mary's death in 1883, Robert remarried in 1897 to Sophia Ellis b1845 who was born and spent her whole life in Ailsworth. Robert and Sophia both died in 1904.
