My eldest brother was a fireman he started off at Dogsthorpe him, his wife and baby were allocated a fire service house down Lawn Avenue! He left there to go for promotion to Coventry! He then went to the Isle of Wight finishing up as Chief Fire Officer over Cornwall and the Scily Isles! They were so thrilled to get that house they were living in an old thatched rented cottage in Crowland!
An old friend of mine used to live there before moving to The coast just before their retirement! I used to take my baby daughter down there I think to the clinic to be weighed! Memories of Lawn Avenue!
I lived at 3 Lawn Avenue until I was 23. An ex mayor of Peterborough lived about four houses up from us and I was good friends with the son of the chief fire officer at Dogsthorpe Fire Station. My mum used to complain about the sirens when the fire engines were on callout so he got the drivers to keep thier sirens off until they were about half a mile up Dogsthorpe Road!!!
Brilliant. thanks Andrew. You reminded me that Chief Inspector David Hankins lived at No 8, one night we had the police helicopter looking for intruders in Lammas Road. Mind you I think the road was quieter after he moved away.
