Henry Geo Wadlow is listed as a councillor for the Soke of Peterborough in Kelly's directory of 1914, he lived at Marylands, Dogsthorpe, which can be seen on the 1901 map. The 1910 Kelly's directory tells us he was also a JP. The directories also tell us he was a councillor in 1903, but didn't appear in the 1890 directory.

From earlier census Henry George was a tailor, and his father also Henry George born 1821 in March, Cambs, was a Butcher, Baker and potato merchant.

In the 1911 census:

  • Henry George Wadlow, head, born 1853 in Lee, Kent. Living on private means.
  • Emily Mary Jane Wadlow, wife, born 1858 in Northampton. They had been married 28 years and had 7 children, none of whom had died.
  • Jessie Rose Wadlow, daughter, born 1885 in West Hampstead, London.
  • Nellie May Wadlow, daughter, born 1888 in West Hampstead, London.
  • Frank Henry Wadlow, son, born 1889 in West Hampstead, London. A shop assistant for a Tailor and Outfitter.
  • Elsie Miriam Wadlow, daughter, born 1892 in West Hampstead, London.
  • Ruth Emma Cox, servant, born 1892 in Duxford, Cambridge. A general domestic servant.

They are living at Marylands in Dogsthorpe and it has 14 rooms.

In the 1901 census:

  • Henry Wadlow, head, born 1853 in Lee, Kent. Living on own means.
  • Emily Wadlow, wife, born 1858 in Northampton.
  • Norah Wadlow, daughter, born 1884 in Hampstead.
  • Jessie Rose Wadlow, daughter, born 1885 in West Hampstead, London.
  • Kate Brothers, neice, born 1885 in Hampstead.
  • Nellie Wadlow, daughter, born 1888 in West Hampstead, London.
  • Frank Wadlow, son, born 1889 in West Hampstead, London.
  • Elsie Wadlow, daughter, born 1892 in West Hampstead, London.
  • John Wadlow, son, born 1893 in Alton, Hants.
  • Donald Wadlow, son, born 1898 in Dogsthorpe.
  • Ellen Showler, servant, born 1878 in Fletton, Hunts. Cook.
  • Sarah Capps, servant, born1881 in Glinton Norths. Housemaid.

This tells us the family moved to Dogsthorpe between1893 and 1898. It also made me wonder where the other children were in 1911 ? Norah at 27 yrs has probably left home and perhaps got married, but John at 18 and especially Donald at 13?

In the 1911 census:

  • Donald Leslie Wadlow is at Oundle School as a boader.
  • John Jeffery Wadlow is living in a boarding house in Islington, London and working as a commercial clerk.
  • Norah Jeffery Wadlow is working as a governess for a family in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Henry died on 8th September 1926, shortly followed by his widow Emily on 31st July 1927, by this time they were living in Bournemouth.

They are listed in the 1922 Bournemouth Phone Book:

  • Bournemth 1728 Wadlow Henry G.    Marylands 57 Portchester Rd.
Frank Henry Wadlow, 267565, Private, 1st Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, of Marylands Dogsthorpe. Was Killed in action 15.8.1916 in France. He is Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Panels 10a/10d.

Frank Henry Wadlow was born in Hampstead Middlesex in 1888, he was educated at The Kings School and had been an apprenticed outfitter. He was 28 when he died, while on sentry duty in the firing line on August 15th. His fiancé was Miss Herbert of Cow Pasture Farm, Woodston, Peterborough.
