William Sly
William Sly died in September 1697, I obtained the following details from his will which was online in the
National Archive. He left estates both freehold and leasehold in Dogsthorpe, Eastfield, and Newark to his son, also named William Sly, who was not yet 21. His loving wife received the furniture of the best chambers, some plates, spoons and a silver cup.
If his son should die before his 21st birthday the estate was to be split between the elder William's three sisters, Anne Miller wife of William Miller of Thorney Abbey, Susanna Miller wife of William Miller of Stibbington, and Mary Sly a spinster who lived in Dogsthorpe.
Sly's Farm can be seen on the 1889 map, follow the link for more about it's history.

In the UK Extracted Probate Records, via www.Ancestry.com I have found another William Sly, Slye, yeo., Dunsthorpe, Peterborowe, Northants. 1659.
The record is in the Calendar of Wills in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 1657 -1660.

My family moved from Dogsthorpe to Thorney in the late 1600s.
Walter Sly married Susanna Peirson who's father Ralph Peirson was a steward to the Duke of Bedfords Estate at Thorney where our family still farm to this day. Walter Sly was left money from his father in law if he left Dogsthorpe and moved to Thorney, which he did. There is a record stating that in 1673 a house of Walter sly was licenced for the use by a Presberterian minister. Does anyone have any knowledge on this event.
