I was inspired to start this web site after visiting the Southery Village, Norfolk, UK, web site, which is sadly no longer available. It happens to be where my grand parents lived until I was 12. I really enjoyed reading about the history of the place, and thought other people may be as interested in finding out about Dogsthorpe. I am particularly interested in the pre 1950’s history when Dogsthorpe centred on the Bluebell Inn rather than Central Avenue as it does now.

The postcard was kindly sent to me by George Meadows, whose family lived in the Bluebell and the Laurels . In case you can't work out the location, George thinks the Laurels chimney can be spotted behind the last cottage, and the Bluebell is to the right of the 2 trees in the foreground.  The trees on the left are where St Georges School stands, and the houses in the distance are St Pauls Road. The true centre of Dogsthorpe.

I was born in Welland Road and, apart from a year south of the river, I have lived in Dogsthorpe and Garton End all my life. If you have anything interesting to add please email adele@dogsthorpe.com.

Whatever your connection with Dogsthorpe please visit our Facebook Page. I have recently learned that Dogsthorpe had connections with the Fitzwilliams of Milton Estate, and one of them chose to live in Dogsthorpe even after inheriting Milton House. If anyone has more information about any part of Dogsthorpe's history, I would be very interested to hear it

One interesting fact, there aren’t any other Dogsthorpes, well there is one link to a strange goblin , but no other places called Dogsthorpe, that I could find, in the world!

This picture appears to have the same white cottage and trees on the left, and the Bluebell in the centre. The wording and font are also identical.

In the years since I created this site I have been contacted by several people with an interest in the history of Dogsthorpe

Dr Avril Lumley Prior has been kind enough to let me add her articles on Medieval Doddesthorpe,  The Pioneers of Early Dogsthorpe , Dogsthorpe Grange , Garton End  and Fulbridge to the site.

Dogsthorpe Junior School have also been in touch, they have some facinating pieces of history in the form of school records, including some which predate the 1950's school. They also have records from slightly more recent history, and I found myself and my brother, and several names from my past.

Having run this website for the love of it for several years, the Geneaologist has given me the opportunity of perhaps getting something back. Their banner is much more subtle than most, if you still find it really annoying say so in the Guest book.

Anyone subscribing after clicking through from Dogsthorpe.com also gets a 10% discount.                                                                                 Adele

Another view of Dogsthorpe Village, the building in the centre is the Bluebell before it was extended in 1920.
